Teixeira Duarte Railway Bridge
PORTUGUESE RAILWAY NETWORK
RAILWAY BRIDGE OVER RIO SADO IN ALCÁCER DO SAL, PORTUGAL
CASE
At Teixeira Duarte Engineering and Construction LDA service in Portugal, the Geoproviders founder was then the team’s managing director who executed the new railway crossing’s foundations and auxiliary structures over the Sado River in Alcácer do Sal, Portugal.
TASK
Revisiting the tender proposal showed some technical constraints and possible economic loss.
To overcome this significant constraint, the solution was to call the special foundations team responsible for all the foundation’s works dispersed in several construction departments to reduce this potential loss.
From running a 3 million project initially addressed to the foundation’s department, it ended up in a challenging 16 million.
The work comprised the following activities:
• Large diameter bored piles with permanent auxiliary steel casings (up to 50m long) overcoming the water and the weak topsoil layers.
• Steel casing and sheet piles supply management, commercial and operational.
• Driving sheet pile and construction of several cofferdams.
• Construction of Jetty platforms on both margins, pile foundations and steel superstructure.
• Driven piles for the provisional piers, which support the deck’s steel launching box girder and the arches’ lifting.
RESULTS
We succeeded in restructuring all the permanent and temporary processes and reducing costs by implementing alternative methodologies, increasing the construction pace, and paving the way for claiming losses due to unforeseen events.
